This is the second time I have had the privilege to interview this amazing young woman. About seven years ago, I had a nice chat with Sierra about her deep sea expeditions in Alaska and her media production company. These days, Sierra is competing as a member of the USSMA team. When I spoke to her recently, she was soon to be traveling to Switzerland to compete and take in some of the alpine and Swiss culture.
As I begin to write this post, I went over to Sierra’s Facebook and just three hours ago, she shared this…
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9. And the more I ponder that verse the more I can perfectly make sense of Gods leading me to this place from the beginning. My heart is filled with so much gratitude for where He has taken me in this journey in ski mountaineering (skimo)….the most challenging, fun, and gratifying sport ever invented.
Today marks a new beginning as I fly across the pond. I’ll be headed to Europe for two months to compete and ski race for my country and on the European skimo circuit, beginning with the World Championships in Villars Switzerland. This past year has been a season of growth both personally and athletically. I couldn’t have made it this far with out the support and guidance of some really great mentors, friends, teammates, coaches, sponsors, and of course my family. Achievements like this are never done alone, so thank you for helping me be the best I can be.
In so many ways, Sierra represents what Courageously Go! is all about: living life from our hearts, having adventures, taking risks, not overthinking things, being in the moment, making the most of what we have, and going for it! If I had a hero/heroine it would probably be this amazing young woman.
This was the bio I prepared to introduce her on my show…it’s a brief summary for her (trust me, a bio of everything Sierra has done with her life thus far could take up pages)…
Sierra grew up spending her summers in Alaska and winters in Colorado. Sierra is a certified merchant mariner and photographer. She conceived, pitched, sold, and starred in the first ever family fishing series in Alaska to Discovery Communications TV Network. She worked as a DP for National Geographic’s TV show “Red Alaska. Sierra helped found The Real Alaska which has since become Young Fishermen of America, a social network and resource for all things commercial fishing. She Founded Fox Cape Productions, a video production company specializing in story and marketing in the global fishing and maritime industries, as well as extreme outdoor adventure. She has traveled to 50 countries on 6 continents and produced promotional media for different companies internationally.
A long- time downhill ski racer, AIARE 1 certified in backcountry skiing, Professional certified Alpine Ski instructor and Downhill Ski race coach for local race team. She has also been a competitive figure skater and an all- star NCAA track and cross country athlete, and now a member of this year’s USSMA (United States Ski Mountaineering Association) Skimo team. She is the GM of Sierra Gales Seafoods. Did we happen to mention that she is only 33 years old?!
Thank you Sierra. I wish you much success and a wonderful adventure in Switzerland I and look forward to catching up with you again in the near future.
